GALLERY 1×1xOne: Our Children • Their Images

This summer we are pleased to present a new art show in the Capri Theater lobby gallery featuring art created by North Minneapolis youth presented by Homewood Studios and Plymouth Christian Youth Center: GALLERY 1×1xOne: Our Children • Their Images. Curator George Roberts of Homewood Studios writes:

We want the best for our children. We hope to give them models of how to view themselves as creative, contributing members of our community. We invite them to tell us their stories.

In 2007 we determined to offer our children a space at Homewood Studios to share their art with us, to show us what they feel and what they know. Since then, Gallery 1×1xOne – one piece of art for one month by one young artist – has shown the artwork of more than twenty five young artists in our widow gallery. The majority of those children are represented in this retrospective show.

The gifts of working with these young artists are many: the look on a child’s face as she brings her painting into the space for approval; the self-conscious smiles as we interview her, asking serious questions about intention and work methods, inspiration and problem-solving; or her wide-eyed pleasure when the work goes up on the wall and she sees herself, perhaps for the first time, as a ‘real’ artist.

And you can watch people walking down the sidewalk stop, look at the work and read the interview in the window. You can see them “get it” in a way that has nothing to do with art criticism or knowledge of art history. Children’s art speaks from their heart to ours. What they show us tells us who we all are.

OUR CHILDREN • THEIR IMAGES gives us a good long look at what is important, basic, about our lives as a community: family, self-portraits, pets, elements of nature, the objects of our daily lives. How simple and unspoiled their view of who we are seems. How much they have to teach us.
